There are two types of gorillas, namely, the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla.
Each type is divided into two subspecies, the eastern lowland gorilla and the mountain gorilla, and the western lowland gorilla and the river gorilla.
Why are gorillas at risk of extinction and how many gorillas are left
Western lowland gorillas are the most numerous of the four subspecies, where population estimates often refer to 100,000-200,000, however, due to their
dense and remote habitats no one knows for sure their number, and the least numerous are river gorillas, which are limited
to scattered areas of forests in Nigeria and Cameroon, and is thought to be no more than 300 individuals.
Recent surveys estimate the number of mountain gorillas now to be 1,004. Sir David Attenborough, who first visited mountain gorillas in 1979, said it was very encouraging to see
how the efforts of so many different groups of communities, governments and NGOs had paid off.
Threats to mountain gorillas are disappearing completely, of course, so the challenge now must be ensuring these achievements continue long into the future.
In November 2018, it was announced that mountain gorillas were no longer endangered, although conservation work continues.
How much does a gorilla weigh
Gorillas are the largest primates in the world, with males weighing about 143-169 kg and standing about 1.4-1.8 meters in the wild.
Females tend to be shorter than 20 to 30 cm and weigh almost half the weight of males. From 2.3 to 2.6 meters while the female gorilla's arms are relatively smaller.
The largest gorilla in the world weighed 267 kg when it was shot in Cameroon, but it was not as tall as another silver-backed gorilla that was shot in the Congo in 1938.
The length of that silver gorilla was 1.95 meters, and it measured 1.98 meters around the chest and the length of an arm. 2.7 m and weighing 219 kg. In captivity, gorillas reached greater weights, sometimes more than 310 kg.
How strong is the gorilla
It is difficult to gauge how strong a gorilla really is, but estimates range from about 4x–10x stronger than a normal human.
The strength of the silver-backed gorilla is certainly enormous.
All types of gorillas can knock down banana trees without much effort.
They escape from cages by bending iron bars. They have a bite force of about 1,300 pounds per square inch, twice that of a lion.
But apart from the conflicts between silver gorillas, gorillas tend to be gentle giants who rarely show their full strength.
They are also designed quite differently from humans, which makes them more efficient climbers and better adapted to walking on all fours.
For human standards it does not make sense because they will not be able to perform some movements that we take for granted because they are balanced quite differently.
What do gorillas eat
Gorillas are mainly herbivores, and their diet consists mostly of bamboo, fruit, and leafy plants, although western lowland gorillas also eat small insects. Gorillas play a vital role in Disperses seeds as wandering herbivores.
Many large fruit trees depend on these animals for survival, and research published in early 2016 showed that gorillas hum when content with eating
their favorite food, explained Simon Pekka It seems that gorillas startle and sing when they eat. You come across food you really like, and this is very similar to our behavior when eating delicious food and emphasizing this by making sounds.
How can gorillas walk on their knuckles
Gorillas (in addition to chimpanzees and bonobos) specialize in knuckle walking, and this is not because they cannot bear their weight in an upright position and can walk on two feet when necessary.
As a knuckle walker, gorillas have various adaptations for stability and weight bearing, and finger bones that bear The weight of the animal is expanded and flattened for added strength in the forearm.
The end of the radius closest to the hand is curved and pointed downward, allowing it to fit snugly alongside the navicular at the wrist.
The metacarpals (knuckle bones) have ridges that hold in place with the bones of the fingers.
In general, the hands and wrist of a gorilla are strong, stable, capable units On the support of a male weighing 270 kg.
How many baby gorillas
Female gorillas usually give birth to only one young every four to six years.
In total, the female gives birth only three or four times. This low reproduction rate makes it difficult for the population to recover after the decline.
A 2012 study of captive groups revealed that female gorillas Western plains use some form of communication with
their young, and scientists have observed that mothers use tactile gestures more frequently with their young than with other adults.
Where do gorillas get their names from
The word gorilla dates back at least 2,500 years.
The Carthaginian explorer Hanno the Navigator was on an expedition to the West Coast of Africa around 500 B.C.
These were actually gorillas, or some other type of monkey or even a group of people unknown but Hanno's translators told him they were called gorillas and the name stuck to this day.
